Wednesday Tips #25 2014

2014-11-19 00.42.52Our latest trip to The Melbourne Zoo included a visit to the Butterfly House. Miss Five was desperate for a butterfly to sit on her hand but the ability to stay still long enough was going against her. Second best was a butterfly landing on her hat. We spent ten minutes watching the beautiful butterflies and to add to the fun I let her take a photo  when a butterfly landed on my shoulder. Camera strap firmly around her neck!

A reminder that children are admitted free at Zoos Victoria sites during the school holidays. A trip to any of their establishments makes a great holiday treat for children and grandparents alike.

My first tip is pack some simple food, water bottles, sunscreen and hats. The second is to go early and don’t try to see everything. Parking is only $2 for five hours which is great value.

Wednesday Tips # 22 2014

2014-08-20 01.45.15 2014-08-20 01.25.57

I have found one of the things I really enjoy about being a grandparent is sharing my grandchildren’s interests.

When one of them expresses an interest or asks questions about a particular topic I like to follow that through and find out more together.

Recently, one of my granddaughters has expressed interest in the first people of Australia so we have been investigating indigenous culture together. The Melbourne Museum has the wonderful Bunjilaka Centre.  http://museumvictoria.com.au/bunjilaka/

Here there are great displays and interactive activities for young children. Together we have explored this gallery several times and talked together about what we have seen. There is also an indigenous garden outside which we only recently discovered. Here we enjoyed the colours, smells and textures of plants which are used for food, technology and  medicine by indigenous people.

This museum offers membership benefits for subscribers but being a senior I get free admittance as do children. A great spot for an outing/adventure together.

Have you explored what your local museum offers that you can share with your grandchildren?

Wednesday Tips #21 2014

2014-09-15 02.21.56During school holidays I like to have my older grandchildren come and stay for a couple of days. This gives us a chance, among other things, to go on an adventure, visit the beach or discover a new local playground.

The small park near my home, referred to by the children as “Gam’s Park”, has always been a popular place to visit, however, the play equipment there is no longer  really challenging for the older ones. Fortunately my local council has recently  developed a wonderful new playground which is perfect for our needs at the moment and is only a short car ride away.

I have found reading the local press a very useful way to keep up with development in my municipality   and recommend the reading of such to keep grandparents in touch with what their local municipality offers in the way of open space and play centres.

Wednesday Tips #20 2014

Recently  I experienced the unexpected major breakdown of my fridge/freezer which necessitated the purchase of a replacement.

Feeling cross about the unexpected financial outlay, I fortunately asked the installer to leave the packaging box as I thought it could be useful for my grandchildren as a play item. My thoughts were running along the lines of perhaps a cubby house, but as usual, the children came up with their own ideas.

On the day they all visited my home for a family lunch, all four grandchildren were delighted to find the box on the lawn in the back garden. For the next hour or so they played together 2014-09-14 02.41.56 climbing in and out of the box, tipping it over and generally having fun together. They then added a couple of balls to the game. Great interactive entertainment which threw a positive slant on my unexpected financial displeasure!

Wednesday Tips #18 2014

2014-09-01 22.14.05My grandchildren love to draw, paint, colour and generally pursue artistic projects. From an early age I have made drawing materials and a variety of surfaces for them to draw on available. It is worth remembering that a drawing activity for a very young child is much more satisfying if the marks can be made easily. To this end I have a collection of washable, felt tip pens in various colours and thicknesses. (For my own sanity I keep the waterproof markers in a completely different place well away from small fingers!) Clean up of smudges and overflow is easy with a piece of old newspaper placed under the drawing surface. As the children get older I introduce coloured pencils, crayons and pastels into the mix. When the drawing is finished I always ask the child to tell me about their picture. The one in this photo is “Mummy”.

Wednesday Tips #16 2014

monopoly

I remember learning to play Monopoly when I was young and many hours were spent wheeling and dealing property with friends over school holidays. Fast forward about 60 years and there are  now junior versions available of this popular game . Although operating on much the same principle as the original game, these don’t take nearly as long to complete. A game like this is perfect for sharing with a grandchild on an afternoon too wet or cold to play outside.  Miss 6 and I have begun to discuss strategies for having a better chance of winning. Do you pay to get out of gaol or stay there to minimise your chance of paying your opponent? Do you aim for multiple properties of the same colour to double your chance or do you space your properties around the board? Great fun and a learning experience as well.

Wednesday Tips 2014

waterpaint

After a quiet start to the year due to illness and overseas travel, I am now back on “Gam duty” for 2014 and loving the involvement, love, laughter and learning with my treasures.

The weather here has been too hot for many adventures but the attraction of waterplay is always a winner with young children. Great entertainment can be had with a small bucket of water and a paintbrush. Too young to actually draw yet, this toddler finds blobbing  and splashing water onto the terrace great fun!
