I have found one of the things I really enjoy about being a grandparent is sharing my grandchildren’s interests.

When one of them expresses an interest or asks questions about a particular topic I like to follow that through and find out more together.

Recently, one of my granddaughters has expressed interest in the first people of Australia so we have been investigating indigenous culture together. The Melbourne Museum has the wonderful Bunjilaka Centre.  http://museumvictoria.com.au/bunjilaka/

Here there are great displays and interactive activities for young children. Together we have explored this gallery several times and talked together about what we have seen. There is also an indigenous garden outside which we only recently discovered. Here we enjoyed the colours, smells and textures of plants which are used for food, technology and  medicine by indigenous people.

This museum offers membership benefits for subscribers but being a senior I get free admittance as do children. A great spot for an outing/adventure together.

Have you explored what your local museum offers that you can share with your grandchildren?

Wednesday Tips #19 2014

2014-09-02 01.43.56The “honey bucket  water painting activity” kept in my outdoor toybox has always been popular with my grandchildren.  Treasure #4 has now moved on from painting the concrete terrace to painting various articles in my back garden.

With the bucket half full of water and having the 5cm paintbrush tied onto the handle of the bucket, most major spills and the frustration of the paintbrush getting lost are eliminated. The little fellow has now got the idea of carrying the bucket with him as he paints. He becomes very engrossed in his painting which is helping to develop his concentration span. As he goes we talk about what colour he is using. This stimulates his imagination and helps develop his oral language. The colour of choice for my other grandchildren has usually been “rainbow”.

Of course once he has finished there is an upturned bucket and usually wet feet!

Wednesday Tips #15 2014

Even when the weather is cold my grandchildren and I spend time in my garden. One of their favourite activities is to feed my goldfish. The fishpond is a simple arrangement made from a large ceramic pot and is easy to look after with the occasional clean out of weed and top up of the water when needed. During the really hot weather I place a plank of wood across part of the pond to minimise the increase in water temperature. I am also lucky to have neighbours who are happy to take over the feeding regime while I am on holidays.

Wednesday Tips #19

ImageIt is always interesting how children construct their own games to suit a situation.

In the toybox outside, my granddaughter discovered a small net once used long ago in the maintenance of a fishtank .

“Let’s play a fishing game,” she announced to her cousins. “We need some water please Gam,” they called.

So with a bucket of water and a variety of articles which could float, the fishing game was instigated. This kept them amused for over an hour as they took turns, counted how many items they caught, and fantasised about the size and type of fish they were catching.

Imaginative, child centred and inexpensive entertainment.

Wednesday Tips #18

pegs cropped

And you thought that laundry pegs were purely for the purpose of hanging the washing…….

A collection of pegs and the peg basket provide wonderful entertainment for a toddler. I tend to produce them when we go out into the garden to play on the lawn.
Children in this age group love putting objects into containers and tipping them out again.
If you join in the fun, this simple activity will have you laughing and having fun together.
