Wednesday Tips #2 2015

2014-12-16 05.03.54No matter how much siblings love each other they all seem to have the occasional periods of testiness with each other. Recently, my older grandchildren came to stay for a few days and one afternoon they were annoying each other (and me!) for some reason. Rather than getting more annoyed as I tried to restore a sense of calm, I tumbled them into the car and drove to a fabulous playground nearby. While I kept watch seated under the gum trees, the children had fun  running, jumping, balancing and climbing. After about 45 minutes I was revived and took home renewed happy children!

Motto: Never underestimate the power of a good run around in the fresh air.

Wednesday Tips #1 2015

Happy New Year!
This year I aim to be more regular with my posts.

The year has started well. My older grandchildren have had an extended sleepover and we had fun together. A favourite activity is to go and see the ducks at a nearby reserve. The ducks at this spot are a mixture of native and domesticated birds. The domesticated variety probably started out as pet ducklings which outgrew their welcome in someone’s garden. They are very friendly and actually waddle across the grass to meet visitors for a handout. Bread is not good for ducks so usually I make sure we have an appropriate treat for them. On this particular occasion the children gradually became brave enough to let the ducks eat from their hands which they thought was great fun! Another entertainment which is virtually cost free.

Wednesday Tips #25 2014

2014-11-19 00.42.52Our latest trip to The Melbourne Zoo included a visit to the Butterfly House. Miss Five was desperate for a butterfly to sit on her hand but the ability to stay still long enough was going against her. Second best was a butterfly landing on her hat. We spent ten minutes watching the beautiful butterflies and to add to the fun I let her take a photo  when a butterfly landed on my shoulder. Camera strap firmly around her neck!

A reminder that children are admitted free at Zoos Victoria sites during the school holidays. A trip to any of their establishments makes a great holiday treat for children and grandparents alike.

My first tip is pack some simple food, water bottles, sunscreen and hats. The second is to go early and don’t try to see everything. Parking is only $2 for five hours which is great value.
